Cottage in the woods, Benenden, Kent
This tree house has been designed as a cottage in the woods, and
is built in an ancient oak tree. The facade is made of oak, with
cedar shingles on the roof. The initial design was inspired by the
client’s enthusiasm for a well-known treehouse built for Queen Victoria
in Shropshire.
The colours and materials were chosen after
a study of Wealden timber framed houses and uses oak that has been
sourced within 5 miles of the site. The intention has been to source
all materials from a maximum of 10 miles radius, both in order to
maintain and promote a sense of place and also to minimise the environmental
impact of travel and deliveries.
The coppiced wood for the balustrade has been
sourced from the client’s own woodland and is woven to form a secure
but characterful barrier for the young boy and his faithful little
terrier who will inhabit the treehouse.
